OBITUARY
Freemont (sic) N. Haines was born at Upland, Indiana, on October 10th, 1856. There he attended the public schools and later engaged in the mercantile business. On July 27th, 1782 (sic), he was married to Doshie C. Smith. Six children were born to this marriage.
In the year 1901, he moved with his family to Kalispell, and entered upon his duties as Supervisor of the Flathead National Forest, to which position he was appointed by Gifford Pinchot, the then newly constituted Chief Forester of the United States. At that time and for many years thereafter the Flathead Forest included what is now Glacier National Park, as well as all of Northwestern Montana to the Idaho line. To Mr. Haines fell the opportunity to initiate and organize the activities of the federal service for this forest, and he continued in this work for many years. Thereafter he engaged in the mercantile business in Kila where he continued to reside until recently, when he moved to Kalispell.
Mr. Haines passed away at Kalispell, Montana, July 5th, 1938, at the age of 81 years. His wife and two of his children, Laura and Charles, preceded him in death. He is survived by two sons, Roscoe Haines of Bonner, Montana, and Fred S. Haines, of San Marino, California, and two daughters, Blanche Walchli of Kalispell, and Leta Wells, of Whitefish, and several greandchildren; also by a brother, Morton Haines, of Canby, Oregon, and a sister Mrs. Sidney Nottingham, of Hartford City, Indiana.
He held continuous membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for the past 53 years, affiliating with Lake Lodge No. 50 of Kalispell on April 5, 1904.
It may be said of him that no matter how busy he was, he always found time to visit with his friends, and that among the things he cherished most were the many warm and enduring friendships which he enjoyed.
