There has been speculation over the years by different people thinking that Samuel Patterson probably died before 1850 and left Sarah a widow. There has never been anything that has come up to prove that theory.
Sarah was the daughter of William and Mary Browning Iiams. A lot of details point that direction. Sarah was first married to a Samuel Patterson in 1840 in Grant Co., IN. Sarah was in the 1850 census with the 3 children she had with Samuel living in Grant Co., IN, right next to Samuel's mother, Nancy Patterson. Harriett Iiams was living with her on that census. One guess for me would be that Sarah was no longer with a husband and really needed her sister's help or it could be Harriett wanting to venture out away from home and living with her sister was a first step in doing that. Harriett's death certificate says she was the daughter of William and Mary Browning Iiams.
