Stern was appointed Mayor in February of 1977, following the resignation of the mayor, who was moving away. He was elected to the post in November.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Sanborn, with burial in the church cemetery.
Mr. Stern was born September 26, 1909 in Redwood county, a son of Herman and Theresa Stern. He attended district 88 school in Willow Lake township and graduated from Sanborn High school. He was a life-long member of the Zion church and served on its board. He was a Lions club member and served on school boards of district 88 and Sanborn.
He married Ruth Parker on May 27, 1937, at New Avon Methodist Church, New Avon Township.
Stern is survived by his wife and children Steven, Markeson, Wis.; Scot, Sanborn; Sandra Nelson, Santa Monica, Ca, and Pamela Johnston, Sun Prairie, Wis. and 10 grandchildren. He is also survied by sisters Augusta Dungey, Lamberton; Lillian Jones; Clare Powell, Long Lake; Mary Otto, Redwood Falls; Anne Osborne, Minneapolis; Elizabeth Edmonds, Leesburg, Fla., and Alvina Stern, Washington, D. C.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
