The News -Herald (Morganton, North Carolina)Thursday October 18, 1917Death of an old resident, Mrs. J. N. Payne answers final summons Tuesday morning.Though in poor health for several years the death of Mrs. J. N. Payne, which occurred early Tuesday morning, was very unexpected. She had been confined to her bed for only a few days. Her condition had not been thought serious enough to summon her children and none of them were with her at the time of her death.Mrs. Payne was the widow of Rev. J. N. Payne, who died several years ago. She was 69 years of age and the mother of five children--Dr. Bruce Payne, president of Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn., Mr. Horace Payne, of Morganton, Mr. Max Payne, of Greensboro, Mrs. J. E. Albright, of Greensboro, and Mrs. J. B. Frix, of Richmond, Those from out of town arrived yesterday and the funeral services will be held this (Thursday) morning at 10 o’clock at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. E. E. Williamson, Mrs. Horace Payne, who has been visiting in Salisbury, and Mrs. Max Payne, of Greensboro, also came for the funeral, as did Mrs. J. T. Johnson, of Connelly Springs, a sister of Mrs. Payne.Surviving also are her sister, Mrs. R. F. Goodson, and brother, Dr. E. S. Warlick, of Morganton, and Mrs. Sallie Killela, of Yuma, Colo., the latter the only member of the immediate family unable to be present for the funeral.Mrs. Payne was before her marriage Ann Warlick, daughter of the late Frank Warlick of Burke county. She was in many respects a most remarkable woman. Her energy, when her health was good, knew no bounds; her courage and perseverance were indomitable. To the Methodist church, which she joined in young womanhood, she was a most loyal member, taking a keen interest in all its activities. Much sympathy goes out to the bereaved children and relatives.
