Amos Newswanger, Jr., 90, of Providence Place, Pine Grove, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 17, 2017 in the Lehigh Valley Hospital Schuylkill East. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Family was a high priority in his life. He ran his earthly race that was set for him and now entered that glorious city where the roses never fade.
Born on August 31, 1926 in Ephrata, Pa., he was a son of the late Amos and Lydia Reinhart Newswanger.
Before moving to Pine Grove in 1953, Amos had a farm in Stevens, Pa. He continued farming after he moved to Pine Grove until 1970. In 1965 he co-founded and was owner of Newhurst, Inc., Pine Grove. He loved driving school buses and motor coaches. He drove in 46 states and several Canadian Provinces before retiring in 2009.
He was generous to his church and community. He was a founding member of the Roedersville Mennonite Church, Pine Grove.
Amos was an avid collector of antique Allis Chalmers tractors, and he loved to attend and participate in tractor pull competitions.
Preceding him in death were four brothers, Walter, Paul, Raymond and Lester Newswanger; two sisters, Elsie Martin and Edith Seibel.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Grace Arlene Gehman Newswanger; four sons, Barry and wife Kathie Newswanger, Jerry Newswanger, Clair and wife Debra Newswanger, all of Pine Grove, Fred and wife Megan Newswanger of Hyde Park, N.Y.; a daughter, Linda and husband Carl Dreidger of Willow Street, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Anna Ginder of Denver, Pa.; a brother, Robert Newswanger of Farmersville, Pa., nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. at the Schuylkill Church of the Brethren, 347 Sweet Arrow Lake Rd., Pine Grove with Pastor Daryl Martin officiating. There will be a viewing on Friday, February 24, 2017 from 6:00 P.M.-9:00 P.M and Saturday, February 25, 2017 from 9:00 A.M. until time of service at the Church. Interment will follow in the Roedersville Mennonite Cemetery, Pine Grove.
In lieu of flowers the family would prefer contributions be made to the Roedersville Mennonite Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Jean Hurst, 1085 Rock Rd., Schuylkill Haven, Pa. 17972 in his memory.
