FORMER SONORA MAN CHAS KEEFFE DEAD
Charles Luke Keeffe, born in Sonora in 1864, died Sunday, June 13 at the Lake Merritt hospital in Oakland from carcinoma of the stomach, the result of ailments from which he had been a sufferer for 20 years.
Deceased was reared here, and in the prime of his young manhood went to Mexico where in Mexico City he engaged in the hotel business. For years this was his work and his fine hostelry became famous. Not the least of its attractions was the fine personality of the proprietor.
After years of service and pleasant associations in the metropolis of Mexico trouble arose through the unrest of the country and Keeffe believed the time had come to leave.
Coming to Oakland he purchased a large apartment house and conducted it for some time. Later he came to Sonora where he endeavored to build and manage a hotel. While here he purchased the old Street residence. Finally he returned to his interests in Oakland and remained there until his death.
Charles Keeffe was a likable, up right man who made friends in all of his activities. He was a progressive and a good business man, and family and friends alike found him ever ready to help and to serve.
The funeral was conducted from the home of his sister, Mrs Louise Hartvig at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, internment being in the IOOF cemetery. Deceased is survived by a widow, two sister,s Mrs Lou Hartvig and Mrs Belle Moorsehead of Oakland, and a brother, Philip M Keefe of San Diego.
