MARY KEEFFE LAID AWAY
Death Claims One of Sonora's Most Popular Teachers - The End Came in Oakland
It is seldom that the death of one person affects an entire community but when a telegram was received here Tuesday announcing that Miss Mary G Keeffe had died early that morning in Oakland, the news came as a shock to seemingly every person in Sonora.
Miss Keefe left Sonora two weeks ago intending to remain a few days in Oakland and then proceed to the City of Mexico to spend her vacation with her three brothers i that place and at the same time return to their father, Charles Keeffe, his two children, Gladys and Eddie, who have been attending school here. They were taken to Oakland by Mrs Richard Moorshead, another aunt, who found her sister too ill to proceed on the journey.
It appears that Miss Keeffe was taken seriously ill shortly after reaching Oakland and removed at once to the home of Mrs M Reeb where every care and the best of medical attention failed to save her life, although almost up the the last it was thought that she would recover.
Mary G Keefe was born in Sonora 36 years ago and lived there all her life. She graduated from the public school, also from the Stat Normal. She taught in the Sonora school for over sixteen years and was one of the most capable and popular teachers it ever had. She labored incessantly with her pupils and her tip to Mexico was to build up her failing strength as well as for a pleasure outing. It was known that she was not feeling well but this was attributed to overwork. The attending physician gave ulcerative stomach as the cause of death.
Deceased leaves two sisters, Mrs Richard Moorshead and Mrs William Hartvig of Sonora, and three brothers, Philip, Charles and Thomas Keefe, residing in the City of Mexico.
The remains arrived in Sonora on Wednesday evening's train, and Thursday morning the funeral, one of the largest ever seen in this town, was held.
