Biography

Dr. Wayne LaRue Roquet was born in Des Moines, IA on May 21, 1928 and passed from this life in Urbandale, IA, Saturday, February 11, 2017, at home and surrounded by his loved ones. His father and mother were Lewis Earl Roquet and Verna Claire(Wilkinson) Roquet and to them were born three children, Darlene, Dwight, and Wayne. Wayne's middle name LaRue is the surname of his grandmother Etta May LaRue Wilkinson Stoner.

As a young boy growing up on the East side of Des Moines; Union Park and the boathouse at the Birdland Marina were his favorite haunts.

He often related a story to his daughter, about the summer of 1934 when there was a deadly heatwave. He, just a six year old boy, and his family, along with most of the East side population, spent their nights, for several days, sleeping on the lawns of the State Capital building, which sits at a higher elevation. This was one of those childhood memories that stayed with him throughout his life.

Wayne graduated from East High School in Des Moines and received his degree from Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He was the owner of the Beaverdale Vision Clinic where he practiced for many years. Later he was the owner of a total of five Eyexam 2000 offices (affiliated with Lenscrafters) including two offices in Des Moines, and offices in West Des Moines, Davenport, and Cedar Rapids. He practiced optometry in Iowa for over 40 years, after which he and his wife, Evelyn retired for a number of years to Florida, returning to Iowa in 2015.

Wayne enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard at the age of 16, with permission from his parents and served aboard the USCGS Mayflower which patrolled the Atlantic coast guarding against German U-boats and escorting coastal shipping, besides serving as a radar training ship at Norfolk and Boston.

Wayne was an adventurer who traveled extensively. He was a sailboat enthusiast and an accomplished sailor whose travels included a voyage from California to Hawaii and back.

He was an aviator and with another doctor, co-owned a small plane for years. In the backyard of he and Norma's family home at 4013 36th St. Pl., in Des Moines, he created a colored cinder block patio that spelled out in bright lettering Roquet's Retreat. He did this so that he could easily spot his house when flying overhead.

He was a restaurateur and for several years was the owner and head cook at the Café DeMarco on Marco Island, Florida.

He loved golf, entertaining, beautiful women, good wine, great food. He was proud to be a member of the close knit family of businesses of Beaverdale and served, when a young newly practicing doctor at an earlier clinic in Newton, as a Newton Chamber of Commerce director and was a Za-Ga-Zig Shriner for many years.

Wayne will be forever missed and is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Johnson) Roquet; two sons, two daughters, one step-daughter, sister, Darlene; 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and his treasured little four-legged walking buddy, Harley.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Norma, whom he married Jan 7, 1951 and who was the mother of his children; his brother, Dwight; granddaughter, Courtney Lynn Roquet and two step-sons, Dr. Nick Palmer and Tony Palmer.

The family will receive visitors at Iles Westover Chapel from 5-7pm, Monday, February 13, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the funeral home. Cremation rites will follow the service and private interment at Highland Memorial Gardens will be at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Dreamcatchers Equine Rescue, www.dcerinc.org, 19065 Wigwam Road, Fountain, CO 80817, his daughter's organization of whom he was very proud, for her determination to make a difference, or to his late step-son's clinic, Dr. Nick Palmer/Jim Ellefson Free Medical Clinic, 1607 E. 33rd Street, Des Moines, IA 50317.
