Harlan was the son of William and Flora (Hyden) Bray, Grandson of Tom and Lula (Barber) Bray and Milliard and Nannette (Neely) Hyden. Born in KY.
He served in the army & the C.C.C. before marrying Edell, the love of his life and they had 6 children. Four daughters, Lana, Anne, Mary Alice and Flora Ellen; sons Tom, and Forest.
Harlan was an outdoors man and a very creative master carpenter. He had built and or remodeled homes all his life. He died of lung diease believed to have been a result of restoring older homes. He had brought all the rails and layed them for the rail fencing at the nations finest ourdoor living museum, Conner Prairie, in Fishers IN; which depicts pioneer life in Indiana in the 19th century along the White River.
I remember spending time with his family in FL. in my Jr. year in high school..he made this wonderful "goulash", plus the times he served the biscuits and gravy...not sure if he made them or my aunt, but they were wonderful...needless to say they are not on the weight loss diet. I gained about ten pounds in that month. There were lots of other good memories too with all those children under one roof...somthing I had never experienced being raised as an "only child" in the home at that time. Large families are fun and intersting because there is always something going on..someone getting into trouble with dad or mom fun to be on the outside looking in...I am sure not so much fun for the ones getting into trouble!
He loved playing pranks on everyone! He had the sweetest chuckle afterwards. I can still remember the sound. I remember one time we were at their house and my daughter, who was maybe eight years old, wanted to ride this pony that they had..he told her to "hold on" he slapped that pony and it started running with her head and fanny bouncing all the way to the barn...he had that chuckle of his going on then...we didn't know then that he started a love in her life that led her to a successful equestrian life of which I am thankful for because she never had time to get into the trouble some teenagers do
He loved God and his family and left us too early, there is NO DOUBT we will see him again someday.
He was a member of the following organizations; United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners, Johnson County Historical Society, & National and International Wildlife Associations.
He was survived by wife, Dell; his children, Lana, Mary, Anne, Ellen, Tom & Forrest; mother Flora Margaret(Hyden) Bray; 2 sisters, Geneva (Woodall) Bowen, & Lois Young, Orlando, FL.; 1 brother Herb (Dona) Bray and several nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
