James was the son of James Tabor and Henriette Blackwell. He married Nancy Moore Runion. James was a farmer and a miller.

James purchased 240 acres on the Muddy Fork of Bluestone and on Abbs Valley Ridge, on 30 August, 1845. Grants number 96, p. 746. In 1870, he was living next to Elihu H. Compton. On April 1, 1872, he purchased 187 acres between the top of Valley Ridge and Red Oak Ridge and on the Big Branch waters of Bluestone, grants No. 118, p. 652.

Will of James Harrison Tabor, written 14 October 1891, Tazewell Co., VA, Will Book 6, p. 202:

"In the name of God Amen, I James H. Tabor, of the county of Tazewell, state of Virginia, do make this my last will and testament, in follow. That is to say, my desire is that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon after my dicease a conveniently. I give, divided among them as hereinafter specified. My lands, tenements and have ditainments whatsoever - lying and being on the waters of Mud Fork, Bluestone, Big Branch, in the County of Tazewell, state of Virginia - of about four hundred acres of land, to my sons John A. Tabor, Thomas E. Tabor and said John A. Tabor, trustee for my son S.G. Tabor and his children, my daughters Emma Buckland and Sarah J. Buckland, and my grandchildren Homer Tabor, Margaret M. Tabor, James Columbus Tabor and Edna Tabor, the last four of whom are infants and children of my son George C. Tabor, died..."
