COUNTY'S OLDEST RESIDENT DIES
Salem Bell, believed to be the oldest resident in Dallas county, died last Friday, November 24th at the Dallas county hospital. Funeral services were held Monday at the Fisher Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. C. E. Thiele, pastor of the Methodist church. Interment was made in the Linden cemetery. Mr. Bell, who was born in slavery, came with his parents to Adel shortly after the civil war ended. He was the oldest son of Peter and Elizabeth Bell, the first colored couple to make their home here. He is survived by two brothers and three sisters. One of his brothers is Turner Bell, for many years a prominent lawyer in Leavenworth, Kansas and a member of the first class to graduate from the Adel high school. Salem suffered a head injury in an accident when a young man and has since been an inmate of the county home. No authentic birth record can be obtained, but relatives believe that he was 102 years old when he passed away.
