Harry Hunter Herndon, Jr., age 91, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016 at the Greeley County Long Term Care in Tribune, Kan. He was born on Jan. 26, 1925 in Syracuse, Kan., the son of Harry Hunter Herndon, Sr. and Evalena (Gragg) Herndon. Harry began his life in Syracuse, growing up on a farm Southeast of town and attended Syracuse High School, graduating in 1947. During the World War II era, he was going to be drafted into the United States Army, but rather than being drafted he enlisted in the United States Navy before he got out of high school. Upon returning from his military service, he returned to Syracuse where he continued to farm and ranch southeast of Syracuse. Harry devoted the majority of his life to farming and ranching, and retired
in 1984. In 2010, he moved to the Seasons Of Life Living Center due to his health. In April of 2016, he moved to Greeley County Long Term Care in Tribune, and resided there until his passing. Harry was a member of the St. Raphael Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting elk in the Colorado mountains, had a great love for collecting old classic cars and pickups, and enjoyed collecting art paintings and building picture frames for them. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Sr. and Evalena Herndon; a half-brother, Olen Bayliss; two sisters, Betty Lou Herndon, and Margaret Almeda Herndon; and a half-sister, Violet Bayliss. He is survived by numerous friends. Graveside Services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017 at the Syracuse Cemeter y in Syracuse. Visitation was held on Monday, Jan. 2, 2017
