Mary Alice was the daughter of Michael Patrick Hayes and Sarah Ann (Anderson Jordan). She was the oldest of four children. Her siblings were: Sarah Ellen (Hughes) #51457092, Edward O'Heal #31232838, and Elizabeth Cramer (Wiseman).

Mary's parents moved to Shakespeare, in the New Mexico territory, by stagecoach when she was a toddler. Her parents were true pioneers. They worked for the stage lines at different locations. They last worked for the National Mail and Transportation Company, keeping the San Simon Station. Her mother was the station keeper and her father the hostler.

On January 15, 1891 she married John Edward Hill in Shakespeare, New Mexico. Mary was 13 or 14 years old at the time. They were blessed with fourteen children: Albert, Eva, Agnes, Lem, Elizabeth, Sarah, Alvin "Dutch", Mary, Irene, Burnice, Emily, Geneva, Jack, and Ada.

Mary was 72 years old when she passed away from natural causes at her home at 3631 W Moreland St, Phoenix, AZ. Her daughter, Elizabeth Hedgpeth was the informant. She was laid to rest beside her husband on January 21, 1949 in Double Butte Cemetery under the direction of Grimshaw Mortuary.
