He met Mary Alice Hayes in Shakespeare, NM and was married there on January 15, 1891. They were blessed with fourteen children: Albert, Eva, Agnes, Lem, Elizabeth, Sarah, Alvin "Dutch", Mary, Irene, Burnice, Emily, Geneva, Jack, and Ada.
John was a rancher and stock raiser. He was 78 years old when he passed away from tuberculous pneumonia. He had been living with his daughter and son-in-law, Leonard Guthridge, who was also the informant on his DC. John was laid to rest on October 9, 1946 in Double Butte Cemetery under the direction of Hal Grimshaw.
