The 1880 census for the John Stephens family lists 7 children living with the family. This includes Thomas A. Stephens, age 7. The census does not list a Phillip Stephens. An Apr. 10, 1895 newspaper article states that America Stephens' son Philip died in March, 1895 at age 22. That would indicate a birth year of about 1873. I think the article refers to the person listed as Thomas A. Stephens in the 1880 census. I can't explain why the name is different, but I think Thomas and Phillip are the same person.

America's obituary on Mar. 29, 1895 states that she had 12 children, 10 of whom were still living. The two children known to have died were an infant and Thomas/Phillip.

Death notice (Kirksville (MO) Weekly Graphic, Mar. 22, 1895)- Died- Stephens- At his home, Radical Ridge, March 19th, of pleuro-pneumonia, Phillip Stephens. Burial took place March 21st, Rev. Morgan conducted the funeral service.

Shelby County Herald (Shelbyville, MO), Apr. 10, 1895- Kirksville Democrat- The mortality in the Stephens family, near this city, during the past week, is indeed a sad record. On the 18th, Philip, aged 22, son of Mrs. America Stephens, died; following this, on the 24th, the mother died; on the 25th, Mrs. Lewis, a daughter, died and on the following day, the 26th another daughter, Mrs. Archer, died. Besides this another brother and sister living near Millard, are quite ill, as also is Mr. Archer, husband of the deceased Mrs. Archer.
