Mary Jane was the oldest daughter of Owen and Hannah Bates. She was born in Tennessee. The family moved to Dade County, Missouri around 1840. She married John Clinton Wilson in 1853. The family moved to Colorado in the early 1860's and settled on a ranch at the head of Coal Creek Canyon west of Arvada. They moved back to Missouri after the civil war.
In 1874, the family settled permanently in Florissant, Colorado, where they had a ranch just west of town. They spent their remaining years at Florissant.
