He was the son of Jacob Crum and Mary Ann Cline. He married Barbara Ann Huffer on December 15, 1853 in Augusta County, Virginia.

Jacob's headstone reads: Jacob Crum died Jun 2, 1905 age 76 years, 4 months, 4 days, and Barbara A. wife of Jacob Crum died Oct 24, 1897, age 64 years 11 months 12 days.

Obituary from the Staunton newspaper, June 9, 1905:

MR. JACOB CRUM

Mr. Jacob Crum, an old and esteemed citizen of the Churchville neighborhood, died on Saturday, aged about 70 years. Deceased had been in declining health for some months past, and his death was not unexpected. He is survived by his second wife and a number of grown sons and daughters, among the sons is Mr. B.W. Crum of this city. His funeral took place Sunday afternoon and he was buried at Churchville. The funeral procession was said to have been the longest in that community, being over a mile long.
