Sylvia Dorinda Craig was born in McLean Co., Illinois, the second child of ten born to Alexander Porter & Lora (Weaver) Craig. On Feb. 26, 1856 she married Henry H. Mannen in McLean County. Henry died March 16, 1863 while in the Army. In about 1858 she had a son, Thomas Mannen.
On March 30, 1864, she married David M. Malone in McLean Couny, Illinois. He was a physician and had been married to Mary Knowles. Sylvia and David had three children: Nancy L., born 1870 in Illinois; William, born about 1872 in Illinois; and Jessie, born about 1874. They came to Hillsdale in 1878.
