Richard Arnold Merrell, 77, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016 at his residence.

Mr. Merrell was born in Buncombe County to the late Henry and Estelle Searcy Merrell. He was also preceded in death by seven sisters and five brothers.

Richard was a Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He had worked at EI Dupont as a maintenance mechanic and was a member of Grassy Branch Baptist Church. One of Richard's greatest joys was to share the love of Christ with those around him. He loved the Lord and he loved people. He was an example to us all. His love language was acts of service.

Surviving Richard are his wife, Mary "Suzie" Bishop Merrell; a son, Charles Merrell of Oldsmar, Fl; a daughter, Amanda Merrell Andrews and her husband, Kerry of Kannapolis, NC; two sisters, Patricia Stoll and Frieda Lytle and her husband, Martin and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Merrell and Matthew Andrews.

The funeral service will be held at 7:00 pm Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Grassy Branch Baptist Church in Asheville with Reverend Ken Sausedo officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the church prior to the service.

Burial will follow the next day on Wednesday at Emma's Grove Baptist Church at 11:00 am.
