She attended school in Bruce and Estelline and graduated from Estelline High School in 1958. She was united in marriage to Dean Mohan on September 14, 1958 in Estelline, SD. The couple lived in Lake Preston, SD for a short period of time before moving to Brookings, SD. They were blessed with two children, Myron and Brenda, whom Karen raised at home until they were in school. Karen and Dean moved to Estelline in 1983. She then went to work at the Estelline Co-op until 2003.

Karen enjoyed listening to music, putting together jig saw puzzles, word search puzzles, fill-in the blank puzzles and reading.
