George Burch was born in Surry County North Carolina in 1815. When he was eight years old his parents, siblings and some of his half-siblings traveled westward, leaving North Carolina in the autumn of 1823 and arriving in Greene County IN a few days before Christmas.
George's father, William BURCH, had five brothers and one sister who would eventually come to Indiana with their families. George's mother, Elizabeth RITTER BURCH, had two brothers and a sister who had already made the journey.
George married on Christmas Day 1834 to Eliza Ann Christy. He was 19 and she was 17. Eliza had been born in Indiana in 1817, but her parents had come from Rowan Co, North Carolina.
George and Eliza raised a large family. According to the 1900 Census Eliza had fourteen children, four of which were alive in June of that year. The following names are 12 of the children attributed to George and Eliza:
