Burton was born in Redfield, South Dakota. He graduated from Plainview Academy in Redfield in 1932. He then took a job at the Chamberlain Sanitarium and Hospital, Chamberlain, South Dakota, where he worked for the next 2-3 years. While working at the Sanitarium, he met Ardath Sharon, who was admitted to the hospital after having suffered injuries in an automobile accident. A few years later, In 1937, Ardath became his wife.

In early 1937, Burton enrolled in Union College, at Lincoln, Nebraska, but quit before the end of the semester. He joined Ardath at Spring Hill, Kansas, and they went to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where were married, on Christmas Day, December 27, 1937. Bede and Aura Tucker (relatives who lived in Minneapolis at the time) stood up with them at the wedding. Burton worked briefly for the University of Minnesota Hospital, then returned to Kansas. In 1940, he took a position with a bottling company, in Kansas City, Missouri, where he eventually became a plant manager. Ardath worked there as a secretary.

During World War II, Burton served his country in the Army Medical Corps, 106th Infantry Division, in the European Theatre of Operations. Following the war in 1948, Burton and Ardath moved to California, and settled in the Oakland area. During the next several years, they lived in Oakland, Walnut Creek, and Lafayette, and Pleasant Hill.

Burton worked in the grocery store business, eventually becoming manager of a section. He said he chose to work in the grocery business because after going through the Great Depression, he saw that people would always need food. Ardath continued secretarial work.

January 1, 1974 Burton retired from the grocery store where he had worked for 25 years. Ardath continued to work as a secretary at Diablo Valley College. During this period Burton re-joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church and began selling Christian books for the church organization. He became a deacon at the Pleasant Hill SDA Church. He loved to play golf. He often said it is a wonderful game because it is something you can do when you are older. He played weekly in his retirement years.

He and Ardath had no children.
