Mabel and her husband (Charles) met at a series of evangelistic meetings he was conducting in Spring Valley, MN. She became a Seventh-day Adventist and married the evangelistic speaker. She was very academically inclined. She taught all of her children the First Grade at home. She wanted to make sure they got a strong Phonics Foundation for reading. The children then started classroom school in the Second Grade at the local Seventh-day Adventist School. At many of the locations where they lived, they took in girls who lived with them and attended the Adventist School thus doing the bulk of the housework. Mabel also had a motorcycle with a sidecar that she drove around. She planted and cared for a large garden to feed the family.
