Roland (pronounced Rawlund) Babcock was the sixth of seven children born to CM and Mabel Babcock. He was born in Chamberlain, South Dakota. His family moved to Redfield, South Dakota where he attended school. He graduated from Plainview Academy in Redfield in 1938. He then lived with his parents, briefly, at Saint Joseph, and at Kirksville, Missouri. During the years 1939-40, and 1941-46, he attended Union College (in Lincoln, Nebraska). He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Theology, but was unable to find a position. On June 28, 1942, he married Edna Gilbert, at La Belle, MO.

In 1946, He and Edna moved to California. At Oxnard (in Ventura County), Roland worked for 6 months on a lemon ranch. He then worked as a horticulturist at Newbury Park Academy (Newbury Park, CA). He taught school for one term at Baldwin Park (Los Angeles County), after which he joined the staff of Newbury Park Academy from 1948-1951. For the next 12 years (1951-1963), Roland worked as a machinist, for Schrillo Aero Tool and Engineering Company; and, from 1963 to 1974 at the Talley Corporation. In addition, Roland and Edna lived at Thousand Oaks, CA, and later in Newbury Park.

Edna contracted Rheumatoid Arthritis and became disabled. Roland faithfully cared for her while in a wheelchair, then bedridden, and until the day she died. They were married 57 years. He was truly there supporting Edna.

Roland had a zest for life. He loved life and all it had to offer. People loved his bright, contagious smile. He was devoted to having fun and took the family on amazing vacations every year: Visiting relatives, places where he grew up, national parks, water-skiing, camping trips, and so much more.

He loved playing table games. He was an enthusiastic winner. There was always a puzzle in process at their house. He loved going to Los Angeles Dodger games.

Roland and Edna had two children: Rita and Jerry. He was devoted to his family. His children were the stars in the movie of his life. There was never anything more important to Roland than his family. His took his children and later his grandchildren places, spoiled them, and played hundreds of games with them. He sacrificed and planned so his children could have a private Christian education at Newbury Park Academy and Loma Linda University.

He was totally devoted to God and his beloved Thousand Oaks Seventh-day Adventist Church which he actually organized and founded in 1965. He was the head elder for many years, and the self-proclaimed greeter at the door of the church. Everyone felt welcomed by him.

He loved music and led out in the singing of hymns. He bought a piano for Rita, and later an accordion for her also. Rita would accompany Roland and Edna when they sang duets.

He loved food and would bring Edna's recipe for Potato Salad to church potlucks.

He was loved by his family and all who knew him.
