James Brewer, the son of Richard Brewer and Mary, last name unknown, was referred to as "Captain" in his daughter, Rebecca Jane's obituary and also in his son, Frank's, as well as a clipping from an 1894 issue of the Maysville Evening Bulletin. He achieved the rank of First Lieutenant in the Civil War but not Captain. He served in the 7th Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry in Company G on the Union side during the Civil War. He was wounded by a gunshot to the right side of his neck during the battle of Mossy Creek in Tennessee in December 1863.

An 1890 Kentucky veterans' Schedule listed James William Brewer as alive in 1890 and living in precinct 4 of Robertson Co., KY. His death was confirmed in the release of his Civil War pension. His son, Frank's obit notes that James and five of his sons served in the Union Army during the Civil War, with only one dying, Asbury. His other children were: Melissa Throckmorton and Jehu/Jahu, who appeared on three censuses (1850-1870) and in his father's will. He was most likely named after Patsy's brother, Jehu/Jahu Bradley.

James' father, Richard Brewer was murdered, shot in the chest by "free man of color" Thomas Fulton on Feb 19, 1836 in Robertson County. Fulton was indicted by the Grand Jury on one count of Murder, of which he was found not guilty, and one count of Voluntary Manslaughter, of which he was found guilty. Both Richard Brewer and his namesake grandson, Richard Brewer, died violent deaths by gunshots. The younger Richard was killed by his brother John, who was thwarting an attempt by Richard to kill his father.

Richard's wife, Mary, went on to marry a fellow widower, Clement Rigg, a native of Pennsylvania, on Nov 23, 1841 in Mason County. Mary was Clement's second wife; he also married Lucinda Cullum, who was 30 years his junior around 1845, so it assumed Mary had died by 1845. He had more than 12 children with his first wife and at least one daughter with his third, but no known children with Mary Brewer.

James Brewer had at least one sibling, a sister, Julia, who married William Rankin and had children David, Elizabeth, Henry, James, John, Zerilda, Columbus, Moses and Mary. William and Julia are buried in the Piqua Cemetery in Robertson Co, KY.
