One family tree reported a date of death of August 7, 1871, Mount Pulaski, Logan County, IL, but no supporting evidence can be found and this is unlikely to be daughter of Rose & James.
On December 30, 1857, in Kane County, IL, Phoebe Hamilton, aged 15, with the consent of her father, James Hamilton, and her mother Rose Hamilton, became the first wife of
FOREST (sometimes spelled FORREST) H. NEWTON
November 7, 1832—May 20, 1918
son of Abel Newton (1799 VT) and Keziah Newton (1806 VT) (per his birth record & 1850 U.S. census, Batavia IL).
Forest's 1832 birthdate, from photo of VT records, is one year sooner than that reported on his death certificate, November 7, 1833.
Forest H. Newton and first wife Phoebe Hamilton had two daughters:
FRANCES (FANNIE) NEWTON ROBERTSON
September 4, 1862—June 14, 1943
IDA MAY NEWTON TIFFANY
February 12, 1864—June 28, 1940
(who married Benjamin Denton Tiffany, brother of Edward F. Tiffany, Sr).
Phoebe appears to have died between 1864 and 1869, perhaps in childbirth of Ida.
Forest's second wife appears only in the 1870 U.S. census (aged 24)
SARAH NEWTON
1846—c. 1872
She appears to have died before 1873, when Forest married Rachel Hamilton, Phoebe's youngest sister. Although her exact identity is yet unconfirmed, Sarah's approximate birth year, 1846, and Vermont location, is consistent with that of Sarah J. Steele, sister of John H. Steele, whose first wife was Rhoda Hamilton, middle sister of Phoebe. Sarah Steele appears under the name "Sarah Minor" in the 1860 U.S. census in the Aurora, IL, household of Charles H. Miner (C. H. Minor) 64, wife Lucretia [Steele] Miner, Edward Miner and John Steele. In 1855 NY census of the household of Charles H. Miner 58, Lucretia Miner 48, Horace Miner 21, Edward Miner 16, Nancy Miner 14 [who later married Bestler] Sarah Steele 9 is included as his "niece." This suggests that Lucretia Steele is the aunt of John Steele (1834) and Sarah Steele (1846), and likely the sister of their father, John Steele (who married Lucinda Horton in VT in 1833). Research into these relationships and the possibility that Sarah Steele is the second wife of Forest Newton continues.
Approximately in late 1872 or early 1873 (estimated from age of marriage shown in 1900 census and birth date of their first child), Forest married his third wife, Phoebe's youngest sister:
RACHEL ROSALIE HAMILTON NEWTON
August 15, 1854—October 26, 1921
age 67, Spring Lake Cemetery FW-Tile 423)
Forest and Rachel had 4 children:
CLARA MAY NEWTON ARTLIP
August 3, 1873—March 22, 1938
HARRY SYLVESTER NEWTON
December 15, 1875—February 18, 1922
PHOEBE NEWTON MACHESKY
April 1878—January 2, 1964
ARTHUR WELLINGTON NEWTON
July 1880—October 9, 1918
Arthur Wellington Newton (who married Martha Marion Tiffany, daughter of Edward F. Tiffany and Laura Jane Martin Tiffany) is half-brother of Ida May Newton, his wife's aunt. Thus, Martha Marion Tiffany Newton is both niece and half-sister in law of Ida Newton.
Rhoda Hamilton 1845—1898, sister of both Phoebe and Rachel, was first wife of John H. Steele. Martha's mother, Laura Jane Martin Tiffany Steele was the second wife of John H. Steele.
Mary E. Hamilton (sister of Phoebe, Rhoda, and Rachel) married Oscar S. Newton, the first cousin of Forest.
