Private Sandy Allen Chappell

Co. E 3rd Battalion Ga. Volunteer Infantry (Holloway Grays)

In the aftermath of the Battle of Murfreesboro(Stones River) Dec. 31, 1862 to Jan. 2, 1863, (the War Between the States), the Confederate dead were buried in a mass grave referred to as "the Old Confederate Cemetery" south of Murfreesboro or generally around the battlefield where they had fallen. In 1890 "The Confederate Circle", a mass grave site within Evergreen Cemetery in Murfreesboro, was established. It is a dedicated cemetery within the existing cemetery.
In 1891, remains of Confederate soldiers were gathered from the "Old Confederate Cemetery" and from burial locations across the area, and re-interred here. Around 2,000 soldiers, are buried in the Circle, about 90% unnamed. Private Sandy Allen Chappell is one of these unknown Confederate Dead buried either in this location or at some yet unknown location near the battlefield.
On December 31st, 1862 not quite 10 months after his enlistment on Mar.4th, 1862, Sandy and his unit, Co. E of the 3rd Battalion Ga. Volunteer Infantry (Holloway Grays), were directly engaged in the battlefront with Union forces. His unit was a a contingent of Maj. General McCown's Division, Rain's Brigade which lost 199 killed, wounded, or missing in action including their Lieutenant W.L. Prior. The 3rd Ga.Battn. lost 39, he being one of 6 who died that on that day. In Lt. Col. Stovall's report on the 3rd Battn. from that day he indicates,..."We soon, however, forced our position directly in our front, and when we moved up to occupy it we were subjected to a galling enfilading fire on our right...Our men were rallied and formed among the rocks, and we moved by the left flank toward the cedar swamp, where the fire was the hottest. Here we met our lines retiring in confusion before a destructive fire of artillery. We filed out of the woods, in order, to the top of the hill …. Here we made a stand…" Somewhere in the midst of this carnage Sandy was wounded and died. He left behind his 23 year old wife Emily Frances Reynolds, a four year old son Wylie, a two year old son Alfred, and 10 month old daughter Serena.

Married Oct. 27, 1857 Upson Co. GA
