Serena was only 10 months old when her father Sandy Allen Chappell died as a Georgia soldier in the Confederacy on Dec.31st, 1861 at the Battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River). Her mother Emily remarried Leroy Ellington (Memorial # 51308123) on Dec. 8th, 1865 in Thomaston, Georgia. .
She married Merritt Vaughn on Dec. 28th, 1880, and they moved to Alabama and had 12 children.
