Ruth Irene Eickman of Lincoln, NE, passed away at the Monarch House Hospice Care Facility on May 28, 2016 at the age of 87. Ruth will be remembered for her sharp wit, willing leadership, and faithful service to her family, church, educational and local communities.
Born on the family farm in Republic Co., Kansas, August 27, 1928, Ruth was the fifth of seven children born to Lawrence William and Margaret (Davis) Eickman. After Ruth’s mother died her father remarried, adding a second mother, two more sisters and a brother to the family. As her brothers and sisters married and began families, Ruth shared in the lives of her forty nieces and nephews.
Ruth attended the Victor School #36 in Republic County, Kansas through sixth grade and finished school in Chester, NE. She attended Wesleyan College in Lincoln, NE, graduating with a Bachelor Degree, earning her first teaching certificate. Ruth continued her education, completing a Masters Degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She began her life-long teaching career in Beatrice, Ne, also teaching two years in Sydney, NE before moving to Lincoln. During her 39 years in Lincoln, Ruth served Bethany, Pershing, Norwood Park, Rousseau, Holmes, and Randolph Schools as either a teacher or Principal. She was also the Director of Federal Programs at the Central Office from 1964-1971. Before retiring from Lincoln Public Schools in, 1988, Ruth chose to leave administration and go back to classroom teaching so she could experience, once again, that daily joy of watching young children learn. She joined the teaching staff of Randolph Elementary School where she taught kindergarten.
Retirement gave Ruth the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong desire to serve others beyond the US borders. She became a Peace Corp volunteer in 1989 and spent two years as a teacher trainer in Cameroon, West Africa. Upon her return from Africa she shared her souvenirs and experiences with hundreds of children and adults through speaking engagements. Other volunteer services included work with Heifer Project International, The Lincoln Literacy Council, The Refugee Women’s Sewing Group, The Lincoln Public Schools Foundation, Christ United Methodist Church, Eastmont Towers, and many more.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents Lawrence and Margaret Eickman and Ruth Corbit Eickman, brothers Don and wife Nellie Eickman, Dale and wife Betty Eickman, Warren Eickman, Neal and wife Donna Eickman, Wayne Corbit, sister Ruth Canning, Marge TeKolste and sister-in-law Reuberta Eickman.
Survivors include brother, Milton Eickman, sister, Betty Corbit Cassleman Bradford, sisters-in-law Gweneth (Mrs. Warren) Eickman and Betty (Mrs. Wayne) Corbit, brothers-in-law Larry TeKolste and Virgil Canning and many, many nieces, nephews, their families and her many friends.
Services for Ruth Eickman will be held Friday, June 10, 2016 in Chester, NE. Inurnment at 10:00AM at the Chester Cemetery with Memorial Service at 11:00AM at the Chester United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mark Baldwin, officiating. A luncheon for family and friends will follow the services.
