Albert Edge Burks, aged 86, died on Friday, May 27th, at the Hearthstone Health Center/Nursing Home in Round Rock, Texas after a hard three year fight against cancer.

Albert was born in Linwood, Alabama on June 6th, 1929 to Daniel Dozier Burks and Annie Elizabeth (Turner) Burks. Albert was the youngest of 13 children. He and his siblings grew up working hard on the family farm. It was a tough but happy childhood for young Albert in rural Alabama during the depression and WWII. When Albert finished High School he joined the newly formed U.S. Air Force in order to see the world. After basic training he was sent to England as a military policeman, where one of Al's buddies persuaded Al to apply for flight school. Al was accepted and soon became a 2nd Lieutenant, with the aeronautical rating of Aircraft Navigator. He served for 28 years in the Air Force, flying in many different airplanes, among them transports, weather aircraft, and bombers such as the B-47 and B-52. Al retired as a Major in the United States Air Force, having served faithfully and honorably on July 1, 1974. In February 1956, Albert married a young widow, Myra Leona (Holderman) Whitney. Their marriage lasted 45 happy years until Myra's death in 2001. Together they traveled the world during Al's military career, and in 1970 they settled down in Austin, Texas. Albert enrolled at St. Edward's University, studying Business Administration and graduating Maxima Cum Laude in May of 1977. Al then embarked on a second successful career as an auditor for the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation, becoming Manager of External Audits. Al and Myra bought their dream home in Round Rock, Texas just off the 18th hole of the golf course at Forest Creek, where Myra pursued her hobby, painting, and Al enjoyed playing golf. Al had always been an avid golfer, and living on the the golf course was a dream come true. He enjoyed many years of golf, playing with his golfing pals on the area's fine golf courses, as well as prestigious golf courses around the world.

Albert is survived by one son, Albert E. Burks Jr.; one daughter Deborah A. Dieterich; two stepsons, Eric A. Whitney and Robert K Whitney II; four grandchildren, Travis W. Burks, Justin R. Burks, Anthony J. Dieterich and Amanda V. Whitney; three great-grandsons, Dominic, Chace, and Kaden Burks; as well as other family and dear friends.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p. m., Saturday, June 04, 2016, at the Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville, Texas.
