Mr. Smith passed away at his residence after a long illness.
Mr. Smith was a lifelong resident of Oak Grove where he was a member of First Church of God. A combat veteran of World War II, John Wesley served in the 11th Infantry Regiment of the 5th Infantry Division in the European Theatre. He was badly wounded during the war and received a purple heart along with several campaign ribbons. After the war he became a surveyor and had extensive knowledge of properties in Northeast Louisiana.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Estus Smith and Bettie Emma Adkins Smith; 3 brothers, Steve D. Smith, Jack M. Smith, and Thomas G. "Skippy" Smith; 5 sisters, Lela Smith, Doris Vining, Hilda "Tookie" Hankins, Marjorie "Skeeter" Lewis, and Estus Smith.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Bertha Mae Roberts Smith of Oak Grove, Louisiana; son and daughter-in-law, Estus R. and Erika Smith of Crailsheim, Germany; daughter and son-in-law, Beverly A. and Bobby Hodge of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; daughter and son-in-law, Becky S. and Russell Bracey of Oak Grove; son, John W. "Johnny" Smith, Jr., of Oak Grove; little brother, Greg Crook of Beaumont, Texas; grandson and his wife, Brad and Raegan Hill of Olathe, Kansas; granddaughter, Erin Hill of Oklahoma City; grandson, Ben Hill of Oklahoma City; granddaughter and her husband, Catherine Smith-Kuch and Manuel Kuch of Crailsheim, Germany; grandson and his wife, Nicholas and Scarlett Bracey of Ruston, Louisiana; granddaughter, Aja Smith of Oak Grove; granddaughter, Ali Smith of Swartz, Louisiana; 4 great grandchildren: Rusty, Viv, Boston & Case; sister, JoAnn Smith Hankins of Lake Providence, Louisiana.
