Mary Ann Grabeel was the daughter of Parson Isaac and Nancy Hardy Russell Grabeel, born in either Brodhead, Rockcastle County, KY or Casey County, KY, both sources have been found.

She married in Rockcastle, Pulaski County, Kentucky on May 3, 1878 to John Crane Bishop, the son of Jonathan and Sarah Ann (Price) Bishop. Her brother Jacob "Alexander" Grabeel married Mary Elizabeth Watson on the same day, all by W.O. Watts.
Mary Ann and John began their married life on a farm in Kentucky where their first 5 or 6 children were born. Then they moved to Missouri about 1887 where their next 6 children were born. After the loss of 2 little daughters, Sallie in May 1890 and Gracie in June 1891, they adopted 2 nieces, Sophronia Belle Grabeel and Ida May Grabeel. Two more sons were born.. And last, they moved to Texas where their set of twins and youngest son were born. Their children:

3. James Jonathan Bishop, 1881-1902
