John Crane, or J.C., Bishop, was the son of Jonathan and Sarah (Sallie) Ann (Price) Bishop.
He married in 1878 in Kentucky to Mary Ann Grabeel, daughter of Parson Isaac and Nancy (Russell) Grabeel. J.C. Bishop was a farmer. They moved to Thornfield/Grabeel community in Ozark County, Missouri about 1887. In a news item about the death of a newborn daughter Sallie, he has the title "Dr." When they moved to Texas in 1898., his son Noah Thomas Alford Bishop. about 9 years old, was kicked in the head by a horse and later was put in an asylum in San Antonio for the remainder of his life, due to anger issues brought on by the head injury.

They had 14 or 15 children of their own and adopted 2 Grabeel nieces. Eleven of those were alive in 1910, the year of John Crane Bishop's death.
