Paul Elsworth Drane, 84, of 73 N. Hershey Ave., Leola, died Friday evening at Ephrata Community Hospital after an illness of several months. He was a retired master sergeant in the U.S. Army, where he served for more than 30 years in Japan, Germany and throughout Europe, and received a number of medals, including a Bronze Star. He was a member of First Methodist Church, East Liverpool, Ohio. Before joining the Army he was an open hearth worker at Crucible Steel in Midland. He enjoyed gardening and ceramic work, and received many awards for his homegrown roses at the New Holland Fair. He was a 32nd degree mason in the Harrisburg Consistory, and a member of Askosoka Lodge 120 Free & Accepted Masons. He was a life member of the VFW 66 in East Liverpool, Ohio, and one of the founders of ROTC at Youngstown College in Ohio. He was married to Kathryn D. Chandler Drane for 53 years in October. Born in Cambridge, Ohio, he was the son of the late Harry R. and Minnie McCornel Drane. Surviving besides his wife are two sisters, Eleanor Diehl of Largo, Fla., and Charmaine, married to John Wilkinson of Buffalo, N.Y.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
