After his military service ended in 1963 his young family moved back to Canon City where he co-owned McMillan and Company, an office supply and Hallmark store, with his mother. He went to work with his father in 1969 at McMillan Realtors, Suzie joined the company and they bought the business in 1974. The couple worked in the real estate business side by side for 36 years, living in Las Vegas for a time.
John was active in many organizations, and served in numerous leadership positions. They include: First United Methodist Church Board of Trustees, Boy Scout Leader, Jaycees President and Festival Chairman, Royal Gorge Association of Realtors President, Colorado Association of Realtors Vice-President, Executive Committee and Treasurer.
Known for his optimism, persistence, wit, and kindness, John cherished his family and friends. He loved taking his family camping and boating, and enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Colorado wilderness.
At John's request no memorial services are planned, donations may be made to the Parkinson Association of the Rockies or Sangre de Christo Hospice.
