Ilo was educated in Clay County, Kansas, he married Florence Black May 15, 1927, at Topeka, Kansas. They are the parents of five children and 11 grandchildren.

He had the Chevrolet dealership in Newton, Kansas. After moving to Canon City, he operated the Chevrolet, Cadillac and Oldsmoblile dealership from 1952-1958. He started McMillan Realtors in 1959, retiring from the firm in 1974.

IA was active in Boy Scouting, a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 96, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, Pueblo; a life member of the Elks No. 610; as well as a member of IOOF. A member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years, he served on the church board.

Ilo's nicknames were "I.A." and "Mac."
