Lucile was born April 21, 1918 and grew up on a tenant farm along Big Creek near Chalmers, Indiana. She was the youngest of four children of Luther and Ada (Hendricks) Gordon and their only child born in Indiana.
She graduated from Idaville High School with the Class of 1935. Following graduation, she worked with the Koontz Insurance Agency in Monticello and later for the White County Title and Abstract Company. She went on to serve during the war years as Deputy Recorder in the White County Recorder’s Office.
On October 13th, 1946, she united in marriage with James Howard Saylor at the Idaville Methodist Church. The new couple resided in Burnettsville where her husband operated Saylor’s Home Store. The following year they sold the grocery and meat market and started in business as Saylor Candy Company. In the years that followed she remained active in the family business, her community and her church. She retired from her role in the company in 2013 at age 95.
She is survived her two sons, Jeff Saylor and Jim (wife Lynn) Saylor of Burnettsville, Indiana; former Daughters-in-law, Pam Saylor and Jan (Husband Mike) Blackburn of Burnettsville, Indiana; several grandchildren and nieces.
She was the last of her generation in the Gordon family and was preceded in death by her husband, J. Howard Saylor in 2009; her brother, Donald “Shine” Gordon; her sisters,
Helen Jester and Velma “Ted” Winegardner.
