Nathan C. Binford was a son of Robert and Martha (Hill) Binford. He attended Earlham College and graduated from the Inndianapolis Business College. He married Lucy Hill. He owned a hardware and tinware store in Carthage during the 1890s, but went to Greenfield in 1898 when the Capital State Bank was first organized and served as its president. He stayed with the bank until its merger with the Citizens Bank. He was a member of the Friends Church and was a charter member of the Greenfield Kiwanis Club. He was survived by a son and two grandchildren.
