Tazewell - Georgia Irene Proffitt Brown, 84 years of age and a longtime resident of Buchanan County, currently of Tazewell, VA passed away on Friday afternoon the 12th of February at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, TN. She was surrounded by family when she went peacefully to be with the Lord.
Georgia was born on May 22, 1931 in Buchanan County, Va. She was the oldest daughter of Henry Melvin and Ocie Davis Proffitt and she was raised in Premier Coal Camp. On August 31, 1946, she married the love of her life James “Junior” Clinton Brown, and they were happily married for 55 years. Early on, they moved to Horn Camp at Vansant, VA where they lived for 25 years and raised their two children. Later, they moved to Keen Mountain, VA.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James Clinton Brown, brothers, Chester Proffitt, Melvin Proffitt, Hubert Proffitt and Brady Proffitt and sisters, Jean Dye and Darlene Ball, mother and father-in-law Ruthie Vandyke Brown and Clint James Brown. She is survived by her sisters, Beatrice Gilbert, Ruth James and husband Emory, and one brother, Charlie Proffitt as well as daughter Wilma Smith and husband Paul of Tazewell, and son James Brown of Bristol. She is survived by five granddaughters, Vanessa Brown-King and fiance’ Gene Crouse, Jeannie Michelle Keen and husband Mike, Jessica Hope Justus and husband Nick, Wendy Dale McCoy and husband Gerald, and MacKenzie Coleman. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren Lakin Noel Stacy, Skyler Craft Justus, Garrett Paul McCoy, Lakota Raine Justus, Cassidy Marie McCoy, Olivia Paige Keen, Christian Matthew Keen, and Blaze Cullen Justus.
The family would like to thank Evangelist Bob Smith who was a constant and comforting presence during Georgia’s extended illness. Evangelist Bob is truly an example of a spiritual leader who exemplifies care for his congregation. Thanks also to the congregation of Claypool Hill Church of Christ for their prayers. We would like to express our love and gratitude to Jo Murphy who was a constant source of support to the family during Georgia’s illness. In addition, we would like to thank the staff of Wellmont Hospice House including Joe, Mike and Vickie as well as Clint and Jane at Clinch Valley Regional Hospital.
Funeral services for Mrs. Georgia Brown will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday February 16, 2016 in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, VA with Evangelist Bob Smith officiating. Entombment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, VA. Pallbearers will be Family and Friends.
