James Henderson Dingus was born in Scott County VA on 21 sep 1833 the 2nd of 9 children of William and Mary Ann Green Dingus.He moved to Floyd County KY about 1855 with 3 brothers and 1 sisters to farm property that his father had purched for them.

James married on May 6, 1855 in Floyd County to Sarah Belieu Halbert, d/o John Halbert and Elizabeth Farrow Booker. Elizabeth was born on October 1, 1834, and died on November 27, 1919. James was a corporal in the Civil War, Company F, 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. James and Sarah had 10 children, all born at the Forks of Beaver Creek at Alphoretta (Dinwood), Kentucky.
James was a Baptist Preacher
