David Crockett Dingus was born in Scott County VA 10 Oct 1837, the 4th of 9 children of Willliam and Mary Green Dingus. He and 3 brothers and 1 sister, James Henderson, Samuel P, Charles Westley and Phoebe Louisa moved to Floyd County KY to live on property that their Father had purchased for them.

David Crockett Dingus, age 25, was mustered into Company F, 39th Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army for a three year period on Jun 11, 1863 in Louisa, KY as a private. David C is described in his military papers as being 6 feet tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, with dark hair. His occupation is listed as a farmer. His parents were William and Mary Ann Green Dingus of Scott County. David C had married Victoria Halbert on November 11, 1858. He and his brother, James H. Dingus, were mustered in at the same location and on the same day. Most of the activities of Company F during the war were confined to eastern Kentucky .

David C Dingus died in the service of his country in Mount Sterling, Kentucky on August 13, 1864. His death was listed as "caused by fever" in his military papers and his body was originally interred in Mount Sterling. His remains were later moved to the Lexington City Cemetery in Fayette County, Kentucky. This is a beautiful cemetery with the Union soldiers's bodies all contained in one large section. Only 671 Union soldiers who died in Lexington have individual gravestones. David C has no individual marker as bodies moved from Mount Sterling, Falmouth, and Cynthiana to the Lexington City Cemetery were arranged in concentric circles with a central plateau for a monument.
