William Dingus (1805-1883)
By Dr. L. R. Dingus
written sometime around 1945

William Dingus of Russell and Scott Counties, Virginia was born March 27, 1805, died April 1883, was the fourth child and third son of Philip Dingus/es and his wife Nancy McConnell. He was born March 27, 1805 on Cedar Creek Russell County, Virginia, not far from Dickensonville, or the "Old Court House". Formerly it was believed, taken for granted, that he was born on the Old Dingus Bluff, a mile south of Wood Post Office in Scott County. Evidence recently brought to light reveals the Philip Dingus was a citizen of Russell County at the taking of the 1820 census where he is listed. Also a deed for the purchase of a tract of land in Scott County specially says that at the time the deed of sale was signed January 1, 1821, he was a resident of Russell Co. Another deed dated July 10, 1823, refers to him as a resident of Scott Co. Thus the son, William was 18 or more years of age when he came to the Bluff where he continued to reside until his death, April 6, 1883. His birth is listed in the old German Book of Devotion.William & his wife Mary's stone is west of the Philip & Nancy Dingus stones. It is high on the point and overlooks the Clinch River.
