John G. McDaniel is believed to be the son of John McDaniel and Cyntha Alexander. On September 21, 1865, he married Amanda Elizabeth Barker, daughter of Lewis Bions and Huldah (Bates) Barker in Scotland County, Missouri. Settling in the western part of the county, they raised a family of fourteen children, including a set of twins. They moved briefly to Nebraska in October 1896, but returned to Scotland County, Missouri, before 1900, spending the rest of their lives there farming in Vest Township. John served in the Union Army during the Civil War in the Missouri 21st Infantry, Company C, participating in such notable battles as the Battle of Shiloh. He was wounded in the arm during his service.
