Revolutionary War
Capt.
Amos Richardson
Lexington Alarm
Died Sept. 30, 1802
Æ. 74 [sic 75].
On the day Amos died he was 74 years old, and Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of his Age) 75. His actual gravestone correctly uses the pre-1800s old style of stating a person's age at death. On the other hand, in the 1900s Charles Hale, the Connecticut state necologist, misused the symbol "Æ" by stating Amos' chronological age at death on the separate Revolutionary War memorial stone.
