Avis Baxter Smiley, 84 of Jesup, Ga. died Saturday, September 19, 2015 under the care of Georgia Hospice Care. The Long County, Ga. native was a former dietician and homemaker. She was predeceased by a son, Roger Dale Smiley; parents, Harry and Mazie Stewart Baxter; sisters, Zelene Baxter Long, Mersadis Baxter Long, Annette Baxter Strickland; brothers, Myrl Baxter, Winward Baxter.
Survivors are her husband of 63 years, Billy Smiley of Jesup, Ga.; a granddaughter, Kristin and Sgt. Steven Jolin of Germany; two great grandchildren, Jayden and Jace Jolin; a brother and sister-in-law, Mitchell and Aletha Baxter of Ludowici, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Ola Dell Baxter and Myrte Baxter both of Ludowici, Ga.; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11 A.M. Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Poplar Head Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Ray, Rev. Robert Long and Rev. Tommy Kelly officiating. Interment will be in the Poplar Head Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Lucas Smiley, Billy Smiley, Richard Long, Mickey Ryals, Edmond Dixon and Ryan Baxter. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Georgia Hospice care, including a special nurse, Lenette Hughes Harper.
Visitation will be 10 to 11 A.M. prior to services at the church.
