The Rev. Gerald C. Milliken, 89, of Cornwall Manor, Cornwall, formerly of Ephrata, died Monday morning at the retirement home after a brief illness.

A retired Methodist minister, he served churches in the New England Southern Conference.

He headed churches in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He last served in Salem, MA.

Milliken also was a chaplain for the U.S. Army during World War II and the Koren War, retiring in 1972. He was assigned to the Chaplain's School at the Carlisle Army War School after World War II.

Milliken graduated from Boston University with a bachelor's degree in education and earned a master's degree from the university's School of Theology and Gordon's School of Divinity.

He earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Indiana University.

Milliken served as volunteer chaplain at Ephrata Community Hospital and at the American Legion 10th District while living in Ephrata.

He also was a member and past commander of the Ephrata American Legion and was past vice chair of the American Legion's Pennsylvania Department of Religious Emphasis Committee.

Milliken also was a member of Ephrata AMVETS Post 136 and the Mental Health Association of Lancaster, for which he served as director of Chaplaincy services at the former ARC/The Terraces in Ephrata.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ephrata, where he served as a Sunday School Teacher. Milliken also delivered sermons at various area churches over the years.

An artist, he enjoyed drawing in chalk, pencil sketching and oil painting. He also enjoyed walking and counseling individuals.

Born in West Scarborough, Maine, he was the son of the late Alfred H. and Grace S. Seavey Milliken.

His wife, Laura M. Stearns Milliken, died in September 2000.

Surviving are three sons, the Rev. Charles C., married to Paula Pugh Milliken of Franklintown, the Rev. Mark G., married to Phyllis Perry Milliken of Gainesville, FL, and Timothy D. of Malden, MA; three daughters, the Rev. Verna L., married to the Rev. Thomas W. Cahill, Sr., of McConnellstown, Karen J. Milliken of Lancaster and Deborah L., married to Michael Thompson of Covington, IN; nineteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alfred H., Jr., of Falmouth, ME and E. Carter of Cumberland, ME; and five sisters, Eunice Hurd of Falmouth, Ruth Dearborn of Biddeford, ME, Laura Lewis of Yarmouth, ME, Selma Wilbur of West Buxton, ME and Louisa Blake of Brunswick, ME. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Sewell, Wendell and Rolland; and two grandchildren.
