James Edward Cherry, 74, of McGehee, died January 22, 2000, at McGehee-Desha County Hospital at McGehee.

Born April 24, 1925, at Havana (Yell County), he was a son of the late James Hugh Cherry and Beulah Keller Cherry.

He was a Baptist. He was a framer and served in the Army during World War II, where he served in the European Theater and was awarded the Victory Ribbon, a theater ribbon, a Philippine liberation ribbon, four Bronze Service Stars and held the status of marksman.

He was preceded in death by a son, Randy Cherry, three brothers, Don Cherry, Phillip Cherry and Jack Pilgrim; and a sister Bertha Carter.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Cherry; three sons, Eddy Cherry of McArthur (Desha County), Carl Cherry of Bastrop, Louisiana, and Ronny Cherry of Jones Creek, Texas; a daughter, Darlene Murphree of McGehee; seven brothers, William Cherry of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Ted Cherry of Soso, Mississippi, Willie Cherry of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Bob Cherry, Harold Cherry, Harry Cherry and Larry Cherry, all of Waynesboro, Mississippi; six sisters, Eula Mae Nolan of Kansas City, Missouri, Dorothy Caletka of Victoria, Texas, Ruby Weber of Holt, Missouri, Helen Janes of Bossier City, Louisiana, Mary Cherry and Lillian Cherry, both of Buckatunna, Mississippi; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Griffin Funeral Service at McGehee with the Revs. Bob Courtney and Marvin Jennings officiating. Burial will be in Tillar Cemetery.

James Edward Cherry, 74, of McGehee died Saturday, January 22, 2000, at McGhee-Desha County Hospital at McGehee, Arkansas.

He was a self-employed farmer and served in the Army during World II, where he served in the European Theater and was awarded the Victory Ribbon, a Theater Ribbon, a Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Four Bronze Service Stars and Held the status of marksman.

Survivors include, his wife, three sons, one daughter, seven brothers, six sisters, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Burial will follow in the Tillar Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Funeral Service of McGehee.
