William Carroll Osteen was the grandson of William Lunsford of Lauderdale County, TN through his daughter, Elizabeth Lunsford. His family relocated to DeSoto County, MS about 1855. He married his first wife, Julia James, in DeSoto County, MS in 1870. They had two children; Edna Earl Osteen and Wilmeth Gertrude Osteen. His wife, Julia, died in 1867. He moved with his siblings to Lamar County, TX by 1887, as noted in his grandfather's estate documents.

Mary Ida Morgan was first married to Samuel H. Osteen, first cousin of William Carroll Osteen, in Tate County, MS on 09-Jan-1879. They had three children together; Mary Ethel, Myrtle and Jennie. Samuel Osteen died in Tate County, MS on 31-Oct-1893. After his death, Mary Ida also moved to Texas. There she married William Carroll Osteen and they had one child together, Majory Surry Osteen.

William Carroll Osteen moved back to Tipton County, TN and was living there at the time of the 1910 and 1920 census. He and second wife, Mary Ida Morgan, may have divorced in Tipton County, TN. Sometime after 1930, he returned to Lamar County, TX and lived with his daughter, Edna Earl Osteen McHam up until his death.
