We know very little about Dr. Brantley. We do know that his 8 year old son buried here drowned in the nearby river. That must have been devastating to this family - to lose a child so young. Another young son is also buried here - in his twenty-eighth year - but still so young. Reason for his death is unknown.
We only have this one picture of the Doctor and his wife. There were many doctors in this family - numbering at least 10. Four are buried at Hollywood Cemetery, in Atlanta, including Dr. Brantley's son and my GGrandparents, Dr. William Alfred Brantley and his wife. Another son, Dr. James Pope Brantley and his family are also buried there. Another son Dr. Quincy Lucius Brantley and his family are buried at Friendship Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County, Georgia.
Dr. L. G. Brantley & Martha Sturdivant/Brantley also had a daughter named Missouri Ann "Lucy" Brantley/McCullough. She was the first woman doctor in Georgia.
Dr. Brantley must have been a proud father to have three sons and also a daughter, that were doctors - what a very lucky man he was.
-----------
After Martha died in 1875, Dr. Brantley remarried on 3/16/1879 to Lucy A. Lane. They married in Walton County, Georgia. She is shown on the 1880 census as 58 years old (Walton County, Georgia) with him. He is aged 61 years. What happened to her, I do not know. If you can help, please contact me.
--------------
Martha was the daughter of Williamson Sturdivant, Sr. She was born in Walton County, Georgia and died in Henry County, Georgia. She was married to Dr. Levi Gaines Brantley on 1/19/1841 in Walton County, Georgia. They had 8 children. If you are kin to this family, please contact me. Martha was my GGGrandmother.
