Marion U. Woodruff, 83, mayor of Springfield from 1894 to 1896, died at 3 p.m. March 31, 1947 after an illnes of more than 10 years.
Prior to his election as mayor, Mr. Woodruff served as city alderman.
He was a member of the park board from 1926 to 1930 and attorney for the Springfield board of education for several years.
In 1926, he was elected to the state legislature and served one term of two years.
Mr. Woodruff was born June 24, 1863 in Sangamon county, the son of Thomas J. and Mildred Woodruff.
He attended the Northern Indiana Normal school at Valparaiso, Ind., and the University of Illinois.
He was admitted to the Illinois state bar May 5, 1888.
In 1894, he married Miss Sarah N. Smith in the First Congregational church.
Mr. Woodruff retired from active law practice about 12 years ago and made his home with a son, Clarke W. Woodruff, at 2105 Bates Ave. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Clarke Waldo and Marion F., both of Springfield; four brothers, Joseph, of Springfield; Sherman and John, both of Rochester; and Andrew, of California; two sisters, Mrs. Ella Drendel and Mrs. Mollie Campbell, both of Springfield.
Funeral services were held at Thomas C. Smith Sons funeral home.
Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.
